CEPER: Central Europe Buzzing with Olympic Excitement

CEPER’s recent market research survey examining interest in the upcoming Summer Olympic Games reveals diverse levels of enthusiasm across twelve European countries. The survey underscores significant variations in how different populations plan to engage with the event.

Slovenia emerges as the most enthusiastic country, with 77% of respondents indicating their intention to follow the Games closely. Similarly, high interest is noted in ű Croatia and Montenegro, where 77% and 68% of the population respectively have expressed plans to watch the Olympic events. Whereas, Romania and Austria show the least interest in the Games, with 53% of Romanians and 46% of Austrians stating they will not be watching the competitions.

A strong sense of national pride is evident as many respondents prefer to watch Olympic events specifically when their national athletes compete. Serbia leads this selective viewership trend with 36% of its respondents interested exclusively in their national athletes' performances. Close behind, Poland reports 35%, and Czechia shows 31%, reflecting that a significant portion of the audience is primarily interested in their own country’s participants. Slovenia, Croatia and Hungary also exhibit this trend with 30%, 30% and 26%.

Since the Olympic Games are synonymous with winning gold medals, most surveyed countries are uncertain about how many gold medals their national team might win. On average, 23% of respondents didn't know the answer, but many were quite optimistic. On a scale from 0 to over 10, Hungary was the first country where 16% of respondents expected more than 10 gold medals. Other countries were less optimistic. In Montenegro, 27% of respondents expected their country to win 0 gold medals, followed by North Macedonia with 19%. On average, most countries expected to win 3 golds. With such diverse expectations, the Summer Olympics promise to be a captivating event for all of Central Europe.
